The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 45 – Fred Astaire’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz”

In this video we have the legend of film scene “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, tap danced by greatest of the great, top hat and tuxedoed Fred Astaire, from the movie Blue Skies, 1946.  Such debonairness, such purity, such a cosmopolitan, sophisticated, elegant, carefree performance, conveying lightheartedness, and the elegance, fun, amazement and beauty that a good life can have.  It’s lighthearted ease was achieved however, by, according to Fred Astaire, “five weeks of back-breaking physical work”; and the “how’d he do that??” cane work in the dance routine was achieved by a trigger mechanism in the floor.  Amazingly – over 40 years before anything like CGI existed – the 9 dancers in the chorus line in the background are all Fred Astaire too.  That was done by filming him on two other, separate film strips and then interleaving the film in strips into a montage in the back, creating the line of him dancing in sync with himself.  Such skill, precision, energy and amazing ingenuity.  One of my favorite parts is how he walks off-stage afterwards in the movie into the dressing room where the roses are being arranged in a vase.  The elegance continues off-stage. 🌹 : )  The song is by Irving Berlin.  Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Paul Daniel

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 42 – The Lullaby ‘Suo Gân’.

Empire of the Sun

I was deeply moved when I was little when I heard the song Suo Gân. Then I became more familiar with it when I saw the movie ‘Empire of the Sun’ (1987) where it is sung, as linked below, by James Rainbird and chorus. I assumed it was in Latin, but it is in Welsh. It has a verbally explicit and sublime, exalted, reverential, beautiful quality that is very rare, even for classical music. Like some of Bach’s music, it is one of the best. The composer of it, and it’s probable pre-19th century exact time of composition, unfortunately, is unknown.

In ‘Empire of the Sun’, it is lip-synched by a 13-year-old Christian Bale, the star of the movie (later, Batman, The Dark Night, etc, wow!), in his 4th ever role.

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 38 – The Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp.

Harpist

🔱🎶💐 To my knowledge, the most elegant piece of music ever composed: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp in C major, K. 299: II. Andantino:

When Mozart composed this movement of this piece of music, he even outdid himself.  So exquisite.  So subtle.  So nuanced.  The sound of that flute playing that melody, with a harp accompanying it!  Two of the most beautiful instruments in existence.  So much beauty.  Like the sound of a rational, elegant, beautiful world; this world, when we will get it more right!

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 36 – Amarantine

AmaranthusAmarantine - Video Screenshot

Hi Everyone,

It has been a long time since I published an issue of The Beautiful Project. I have been very ill; but I could not let the year finish without one more salvo of beauty. I have been dealing with various health problems which I won’t go into here, but my email address is as usual in the blog’s About Me section if any of you want to chat with me further. I will say that I am convalescing, and it is my conviction that I will recover more fully in the next year. I will keep moving forward. As always, that is the right thing to do.

This issue is about a very special piece of music; released in 2005, by Roma Ryan and sung by Enya, it is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard – the song ‘Amarantine’. It’s sound is unique; one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. The song proceeds from a related equally beautiful concept – in legend, the Amaranth flower is the flower that stays beautiful forever. And how beautiful a concept is that?! Also, as a metaphor (which I made up and might use in a story someday!), any work of art about a person, like a painting, a statue, a poem, is an enduring preservation of them in a way that stays beautiful forever, and can be thought of as a metaphorical amaranth or amarantine. A work of art about them, immortal, a form of them preserved, like the flower that stays beautiful forever.

When this song was released, I heard it everywhere. Now, I never hear it. That’s another reason why I wanted to do an issue on it.

Enjoy the song! I love it’s sublime sound, and the joyful way it makes me feel. The music video is gorgeous, sumptuous. (And maybe go look at Issue No. 34, The Star Flower, an amarantine of the morning glory that wilted long ago. : ) Photo included is of the real long-blooming flower ‘Amaranthus’ on which the legend is based.)

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 35 – Valentine’s Day Itself!

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 35 – Valentine’s Day Itself!

________________________________________________________

For love, I would circumnavigate the globe 1,000 times, if it were necessary.
The Kiss Young Persons In Love 1,000 Flowers

The beautiful thing of this Issue of The Beautiful Project, on Valentine’s Day weekend, the Sunday after Valentine’s Day, Friday, 2/14/14, is Valentine’s Day itself!  Unique among holidays, it is a day devoted to celebrating love, the supremely good response, with the focus being on romantic love.  It’s a good thing. Don’t you think it should be a planet-wide national holiday?  I LOVE ALL OF YOU!!!!!  Hugs!!!!!

In celebration of Love – a great, but rarely heard today Love song/video, and two photos of people in love, and a symbol of Love.

Kenny Rogers (sumptuous live video) singing the ballad ‘Lady’ by Lionel Richie –

This video is also supremely important because, in an age where men are not encouraged to express their most human attributes, this video shows that a man can and should be strong, masculine and romantic and emotional, handsome and beautiful, at the same time.  That *is* normal and good.  Musically, and in many other ways, Kenny Rogers is one of my heroes, and role models.  All men can learn something important from him; he is an inspiration:

He is the epitome of being both masculine and romantic.

And that can be seen in that video.  He shows us all, but especially men, in critical ways, how to be.

And for all the guys who wonder sometimes why I have so many girls in my life in different, but Always, good ways, this helps to answer their question; this is the kind of man I aspire to be.

The pics:

The Definitive Kiss of Prince Charming and Snow White from the TV show Once Upon a Time – and a kiss of two people in love (not a fairy tale : D).

A photo I took of flowers, I call it ‘1,000 Flowers’.  Good gift to someone you like!

See attached.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Everybody!  Keep the love and singing and music and beauty and peace going all year long and forever.  Love is for Always.  Valentine’s Day is a holiday to celebrate it.

Let me know what you think of this Issue, and send me your own favorite Love photos, images, songs and other things.

The Beautiful Project – 1 Year Anniversary And Issue No. 34 – The Star Flower

Image

Hello, Everyone.

As some of you have noticed, it has been some time since the last Issue of The Beautiful Project.  I have been fighting hard to build a life for myself in personal independence, and was ill too, but I am continuing to move forward, and, the difficulties of these past 3 months behind me, I am doing what I teach my Life Coaching students, to keep moving forward.  I am reminded of Issue No. 18 – A Return To Life, and the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem.  Those of you who know me better also know that I have had a resumption of relations with my family recently, after 15 years of separation.  It has been a very traumatic last few months, and I continue my Frodo-esque struggle up my own personal Mount Doom to try to finally chuck the ring into the volcano and succeed in building a life for myself in personal independence, as a writer and Life Coach.

In that regard, I will be doing much less text writing in the issues of The Beautiful Project in order to put the time towards the critical priorities.  That is a simpler, and in some ways, more focused format, which is also elegant, and I expect will be very enjoyable too.  A quick shot of beauty, in and out, nobody gets hurt, ha ha ha.

I was busy and having trouble getting to do this issue, but I could not let the year end without doing one more issue of The BP.  As I now write this, at 4:24 am, today, coincidentally, is, to the hour, the 1 year Anniversary of the launch of The Beautiful Project on Saturday, 12/29/12 at 4:55 am (the email time stamp).  Happy Anniversary!

In celebration of that, in a way, this issue contains for the first time, a beautiful thing I myself did as the subject of the Issue:

I work in the community garden near my home, and I took, with some great calisthenic difficulty, a photo of a swinging in the breeze morning glory on it’s vine, on my iPhone, with flash, which came out really great.  It looks like it is giving off a light of it’s own (it is fun to play with the brightness of your screen to enjoy the different effects).  I am calling the photo The Star Flower, because of the shape of the star on it. It was pointed out to me that the leaves around it are shaped like hearts, so it’s star and hearts and flower, in one photo, all from nature, how cool is that?!!

Enjoy!  The photo is attached.  Note:  You can see the shadow of the flower, from the flash, on the leaf behind it, just to the right.  ( :  !!!  Fireworks on the 1 year celebration attached!  ( :

In recap, the first year was a success, the blog moving from 3rd, to 2nd, to 1st as a Google hit by it’s own name, 350 people being on the email list, and it getting it’s 50th WordPress follower and 100th Like. Hooray!  Here’s to many more years of The Beautiful Project!  The Beautiful Project, Forever!  The BP, Forever!  The BP4EVER!!!  ( :  It’s been one heck of a year!  ( :

By the way, WordPress has it snowing on the blog, the Holiday Season special effect.  Check it out and check out Issue No. 1 at the beginning of the blog, in celebration if you haven’t already.  It’s something – beautiful!  Hahahahahaha!

And please let me know exactly what you think of The Star Flower!

All my best, with Tender, Loving Care, and Happy New Year!

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 32 – The New York City Flagship Ralph Lauren Women’s Store.

The Beautiful Project – Issue No. 32 – The New York City Flagship Ralph Lauren Women’s Store.

On the corner of Madison Avenue and Seventy-Second Street is one of the pearls of New York City.  The Flagship Ralph Lauren Women’s Store, recently constructed in the last few years.  I have spent a lot of time on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and sometimes, when I wanted to relax, I would just go into the store and walk around.  The store is scented with candles, and most of the rooms are themed, designed to be an ultra-specific room – sometimes things like the 1800’s chateau bedroom of a Frenchwoman aristocrat, sometimes the 1960’s apartment living room of a New York City executive.  The other spaces are exquisite retail spaces, unlike anything else I have ever seen in Manhattan.  Walking through these rooms, one has the sense of an ideal world, as it was envisioned by Ralph Lauren.  Ralph Lauren himself used the word I am using a lot now, to describe it in 2010: ‘romantic’.
I love this mansion, and I encourage you to look at as many of the photos in the first link below as possible, and read the detailed description of the store you get when clicking the women’s store link on the right side, after clicking the second link.
And stopping into the actual store, should you be in New York City.  It is an experience like no other the city can afford.
In movies, all the time, one sees New York City depicted as a place of elegant apartment houses with doormen wearing white kid gloves, exquisite boutique stores, well-dressed, well-groomed, elegant people, and a beautiful lifestyle.  In fact, most of New York City is nothing like that at all.  But the Upper East Side is, it is the best of what New York can be, and the Flagship Ralph Lauren Women’s Store at Madison Avenue and Seventy-Second Street is a prime example of the best of the best.
Across the street is the other mansion, which houses the men’s store, and is also glorious.
But the level of lightness and elegance of a particular sublimity and exquisiteness of the women’s store makes it a refreshing experience that is especial, for men and women alike.  It is just beautiful!
